What is online counseling?

Perhaps you have heard of these already online therapy, e-counseling, e-therapy, cybetherapy, teletherapy, and virtual counseling.  These are all referring to online counseling. Online counseling is exactly what it sounds like, it is counseling services offered online. It is a form of mental health counseling done through the Internet. It is where technology meets therapy.

Online counseling can be done on any technological device that has access to the internet such as a smartphone, tablet, and computer. Most online counseling platforms provide a free mobile app that allows you to use your smartphone, increasing your ability to connect to a licensed professional therapist throughout the day.

Typically, your communication methods will be text messaging, live video, or telephone.

There are many pros to online counseling, and it has been proven to be an effective form of therapy. Online therapy services are especially beneficial for those who are uncertain or unfamiliar with the whole therapy process. Why not try it out from the comfort of your own home? You are in control of the whole experience. You get to pick how often you would like to talk, when you talk, how you talk, and for how long you commit to the counselor-client relationship.

Online counseling is available for individuals and couples. There are some teen counseling and LBGTQT specific online counseling platforms, as well. You are not limited to just one platform. Research a few before deciding on one. They may differ primarily in price and in what their licensed clinical counselors specialize.
